Prediabetes Prevention Programme

A practical, supervised programme to bring blood sugar back towards the normal range and lower your future risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Who this programme is for

  • Adults with prediabetes — an HbA1c of 5.7–6.4%, or fasting or post-glucose-load blood sugar that is raised but below the diabetes range
  • People with a strong family history of type 2 diabetes
  • Women who had diabetes during a previous pregnancy (gestational diabetes)
  • People with excess waist fat, high blood pressure or abnormal cholesterol

What the programme includes

  • Endocrinologist consultations — a baseline assessment and scheduled reviews
  • Baseline and follow-up laboratory tests as advised by your doctor (charged separately)
  • A personalised nutrition plan that fits Indian food habits, including vegetarian options
  • An activity plan that includes strength (resistance) training
  • Dietitian and health-coach follow-up between doctor visits
  • Medication review by your endocrinologist at every stage
  • A structured lifestyle plan based on approaches tested in large diabetes-prevention studies, including studies in India
  • Advice on sleep, stress and reducing time spent sitting
  • Medicine options discussed only where your doctor considers them appropriate

How progress is measured

  • HbA1c and fasting glucose; an oral glucose tolerance test where advised
  • Weight and waist
  • Blood pressure and lipids

What to expect

The aim is to return blood sugar to the normal range where possible, reduce waist size, improve blood pressure and cholesterol, and lower your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Large studies have shown that structured lifestyle programmes reduce the risk of progressing to diabetes. Results vary, and regular testing continues after the programme.

Your medicines

Safe adjustment of insulin and other diabetes or blood-pressure medicines is part of the programme and is done only by your doctor. Please do not stop or change any medicine on your own — sudden changes can cause dangerously high or low blood sugar.

Who this programme is not suitable for

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Type 1 diabetes
  • Recent severe low blood sugars (hypoglycaemia) or very high blood sugars
  • Unstable heart disease
  • Advanced kidney or liver disease
  • An active eating disorder
  • Significant frailty

If any of these apply to you, you will still receive specialist care — through a different, individually planned pathway rather than this structured programme.

Information on this page is general and does not replace a consultation. Results vary between individuals.
